TEXAS PROTEST ADVISORIES: SAN ANTONIO & AUSTIN
A police budget proposal in San Antonio has angered activists who were calling for a defunding of the police. The proposal includes an additional $8 million for the San Antonio Police Department. Though this additional money is largely focused on pay raises, not increases police equipment or personnel, activists are calling it a "slap in the face."
RECOMMENDATION: San Antonio has become the scene of an increase in protests and a growth of new protest movements. It is highly likely this budget - still a proposal at this stage - will result in increased protests in the city.
In Austin, a local bike shop called Mellow Johnny's has decided to "no longer purchase, re-sell, or service police-issue Trek bikes" under a contract they had with the Austin Police Department. The move is being celebrated by activists on social media since bike cops have played a pivotal role in deterring militants nationwide.
The actions of Mellow Johnny's will likely not be isolated and will be copied by other local businesses in left-leaning cities wishing to gain favor among militant activists.
RECOMMENDATION: Don't buy bikes from Mellow Johnny.
The Austin Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) are planning a protest at City Hall.
SIGACT: The Austin DSA has been active in several of the protests in Austin, though, their primary role appears to be as organizers. The group is taking a leading role in the effort to defund the Austin Police Department.
