SIGREP: Kansas City Council members took steps Wednesday to deepen a hiring freeze at City Hall, furlough workers and cut more than $23 million from this year’s budget.
Plans to cut positions are on the table for anyone making over $15 an hour, this is down from $20 an hour.
“Even with proposed cuts to most departments, the city expected to face a $202 million hole by the end of April 2026 if it didn’t make cuts to police and fire budgets, furlough workers and further restrict hiring.”
This type of action to tighten the budget and reduce spending is happening in several large towns. This will increase the need for social program for people that are working as government employees. This will include Fire and Police and the cities will charge more for emergency services to cover some of the cost. This will also cut program that mow or service empty properties that are owned by banks. Kansas City is also experiencing a 40% increase in violent crimes, the most since 2017 and then 1990’s, some of the most violent times in the Kansas City Area. With the cutting of emergency services and police force, it is likely that more federal agent will come in the KCMO to assist with investigations.
RECOMMENDATION: Use extreme caution if you live in this area. As the city is moving toward long-term plans, so should its citizens. There might be opportunities to privatize certain government cuts and earn income. Have routes planned to emergency services if possible and develop plans for local action to provide or defend your household.
